What did they do before slabs?

    Not having slabs wasn't a problem for collecting circulated coins in 2x2's that weren't commonly counterfeited. For uncirculated coins, the major result of having TPGs seems to be that medium to high grade uncirculated coins sell for a higher premium because what is printed on the slab makes people overconfident in the ability to distinguish between an MS63-64-65.
