AU vs CU Hi Jhonn, As in coins the phrase "grading is subjective" is used a lot. Mostly by scammers but if you buy currency in a coin shop they often times honestly don't know. For starters a note with a crease down the middle isn't even AU (sorry about that) it's XF at best. That note met a wallet at some time hence the fold. Now as for a true CU note one has to realize that paper is MUCH more fragile than metal. A person can get a fresh pack of consecutive notes at the bank and observe problems. When a teller counts money out to you it results in "counting folds". Same can happen by machine counting. A truly CU note may have a slight corner fold, crimp or waviness as time goes on. Corners may also be blunted by handling. Some will disagree but when you get into "pristine" examples you start getting the Choice and Gem grades. Like I said paper is fragile. A fold down the middle will never qualify. Any good currency dealer will allow you to take a note out of the holder (unless slabbed of course) and "feel" the note. A newer note such as a 57 Silver Certificate should be smooth. No signs of wave or folds. Handle ANY note with extreme care to respect the dealer. I don't claim to be a currency genius but used to go through thousands in cash every day. That's why I decieded to learn about it. My first book was the Black Book. It really does give a decent idea as how to grade currency. Consider picking one up. Not only will it give you a course in grading but you would be surprised at what is floating around out there in circulation. I've found $100 notes at the face value of $1. Wish we could still do that with coins. clembo
