    The relative scarceness of 1909 "VDB" cents was recognized at the time. Newsboys in San Francisco were selling them at a premium as soon as the decision to remove the designer's initials was announced.

    The relative scarceness of the 1916 D Mercury dime was not recognized at the time, and so virtually the entire issue entered circulation unnoticed.
