What is the cause of damage to this coin? I havent seen anything like it before...little "craters" all over and the rim being gouged. Looks like something may have been spilled on it at some point, like a corrosive acid or...is it something that can happen over time?

My guess is that someone was playing with a welder on that coin. It also looks like they did some brazing on it.

In other words...say, trying to alter the coin?

I would say "defacing" better fits the description.
