Someone on a firearm message board that I frequent has this 1976 Canadian gold coin up for sale. He says it is 1/4 oz gold and is some sort of Commemorative coin. Does anyone here have any information on this coin such as purity and would it bring a higher premium than just its gold bullion content? I am curious because I see no reference (in English) to gold content, weight, or purity. Thanks.
here's what this cached site had to offer 1976 Canadian Olympic 1/2-oz Proof 22 Karat gold coins $100 Canadian value per coin. Celebrating 776 b.c. - 1976 a.d.
and at Tax Free Gold: Canadian Commemorative $100 Proofs Canadian Commemorative Series In 1976 Canada issued gold one hundred dollar commemorative coins for the Montreal Olympics. Rather confusingly, two similar coins were issued with different weights and alloys, so that one coin contains a half ounce of fine gold, while the other contains only a quarter ounce.
Thanks for the help! So apparently it is similar to the Gold American Eagle in that it contains 1/4 oz pure gold, but the remaining alloys in the coin make the total weight a bit higher. From the looks of it the coin is the unc. version and not the proof per krispy's link indicating that the presence of denticles identifies the uncirculated (14K) version from the proof (22K) version. Thanks again!
