I don't really remember. But I was occasionally reading on the grading service's forums and then discovered CT. I liked the format and the atmosphere. I lurked for a while here before joining.
I came across a question someone posted, and I wanted to offer an opinion. I think I saw the link on Twitter, but when I clicked it, it came here. I liked the site, so I joined.
Was researching my family's coin hoard knowing nothing and then I saw a sign stating “Whoso entereth here leaveth all hope behind" and I have never been able to leave since
It's been so long I really don't remember, it kinda seems like I was here and the site grew up around me.
I was actually searching for a popular coin forum to join, learn from, and eventually contribute too. I think I found it
Curious about the coins that have been in my pocket for the last 56 years. Was even more curious about how I was able to fit in the same pair of jeans I was wearing when I was 6...So I turned to the most logical place within an arms reach... my trusty computer.. The people on this site are kind, genuinely helpful, knowledgeable and much of the time hilarious.
Some years ago I go away from coins. Recently the spark has rekindled and I belong to a couple different forums. So I googled and found a site that gave the 5 best, with details on each one. This one looked the best for what I was wanting, so here I am.
I am another one who just can't remember what brought me here. Glad I came though, have learned a lot from you guys and been having fun the whole while.
Ya wanna see silly? Picture me in bell bottoms fifty years ago......that's why I wear a bag over my head.......
I had joined in 2007, posted perhaps 10 times or so, and must have wandered off back to the PCGS/Collectors Universe boards, apparently forgetting all about this place, because I have no recollection of my 2007 newbie days. I joined the PCGS/CU forums in 2001. By 2016 their software had become obsolete and was replaced with a horribly buggy interim platform. Then they rolled out their modern "upgrade", which I found to be a wretchedly user-unfriendly interface. Disgusted, I became a refugee. So thanks for changing to a platform I hate, PCGS - it drove me over to CoinTalk! A happy accident, you might say. Of course I still have plenty of friends over on the PCGS/CU boards, and post there occasionally. It is still a great place to sell higher-quality coins. So I didn't burn any bridges. I don't have anything against the people over there. Just the software. But I found I liked the culture over here. The interface is nearly perfect, in my opinion, and the forum culture is good. I like that there is such a robust Ancient Coins forum here. I do wish that the World Coins forum was more active, and that maybe we had a Treasure Hunting/Metal Detecting forum. But it's all good.
I too wish for a metal detecting forum, tho I belong to one. Maybe an album or a thread of finds would be great.
I can't remember why/how I joined in 2014 (that's what my profile says), but really got more interested as I grew tired of the grading company owned sites by the two biggies. NGC and PCGS both did software 'upgrades'. Unlike LordM I don't mind the PCGS interface. NGC took longer to sort-of-fix theirs. Either way...NGC has been a ghost town for quite some time, and PCGS's world forum has slowed down as well. Too much about the companies too--not that I don't like/use them but I get super aggravated by the superior/drink the koolaid attitudes, as well as the occasional bits of high drama. Neither of them are robust enough in terms of content these days. World and Ancients are much better represented here. I still check in on the others, but spend way more time over here as there is almost always something interesting. My wish here would be a dedicated sub-forum for photography--a few pinned posts with the basics, and then more activity. I have found another site with a coin photo sub forum but haven't been able to get as into that. Much prefer this one, so rarely go over there (generally only if there is a link).
There is no shortage of threads on the subject. Simply by using the Search function and - metal detecting finds - as the key words, it brings up about 200 threads in just the last 2 years alone. And there have been hundreds of threads prior to that.
I joined a metal detecting forum a few years ago that I really liked. It's still around, but I haven't logged in myself in about two years. When I was there frequently, the old timers were pretty nice to me as a noob. The site is actually named metal detecting forum. No spaces, of course.
