I am unsure about this coin, maybe I need to examine it more closely... can you send it to me, and I'll be able to give you a better opinion. Beautiful classic head cent! As many have said, they are quite uncommon in that kind of condition!
Thank you everyone for the kind words. When I bought this years ago it was only because of the smooth surfaces. I knew nothing about these at the time but this one just struck me as being a bit special. Why did so few have nice surfaces? Was the planchet just nice from the start or was the strike strong enough to hide the rough surfaces?
I suspect most all of these coins started out with nice surfaces. It's their highly reactive pure copper composition combined with decades of careless handling and storage that most likely explains why it is so hard to find examples with nice surfaces.
