I'm not rich either--just have friends in the hobby and try and find the good deals.

I wasn't going to respond to this thread because most folks won't recognize the coins I'm talking about - but what the heck. My primary goal is trying put together a date set of Netherlands gold ducats. Likely an impossible task, but I won't know if I don't try. And if I can find nice examples, Netherlands hammered gold; in particular a mint set of the real d'or and the rose nobles. And throw in an occasional ducaton if I can find nice ones.

I also collect Spanish colonial silver coins known as columnarios. I've been in love with these since my early 20's. Then of course we have the French coinage with my main interest being the French Royal gold & silver coins. In particular, Louis XIIII. I do collect some of the more modern French gold like the Angels & Roosters. And then there is gold, with select silver pieces, from the 2nd & 3rd republics.

Other than that, I have a few miscellaneous gold pieces from various European countries, original Maundy sets from Great Britain and if I can find them ( affordable ) older original UK Proof sets.

    That's about it - I think :D

I don't know much about the hobby, but I do know it takes discipline - I have a monthly budget, and within that budget I have set aside what I am able to spend on my collection - supplies, reference material, and coins combined. Whatever I don't spend, I stash for the next month.

I don't spend a fortune on my collection, by any means, but I'm proud of what I have because I worked to get what's there. Over the years I have traded up (and unfortunately, in some cases, down) here and there.

I think that's one of the great things about this hobby, it can be enjoyed by people in vastly different price ranges.
