A few years ago I used to belong to them all, even helped develop and run a few before CT existed. Many have come and gone over the years. But there are only 3 where I still have an active membership, CT of course, NGC and PCGS. Though I very seldom post at either of the latter 2 anymore I still read them from time to time.
Asking a question like this would be like walking into a Ford dealership and asking the sales guys what's the best car to own!
I have read on NGC and PCGS, (belong to NGC I believe), but don't post. While I respect many experts there the in depth knowledge, many are cruel jerks. Think of the worst types of dealers you run across at shows, then take away any limits they may impose on themselves by the prospect of making money or physically being in danger by what they may say to another person. That is the temperment of some of those posters in my view.
The NGC and PCGS boards are VERY different animals. To throw them in the same bin and judge them as one is not even possible. One of them is as you describe in my experience, but the other is no where close to deserving of the negative remarks. I spend a fair amount of time on the NGC boards, and while they are slower with replies and have less "traffic" than the PCGS boards, the NGC board is far more civil, helpful, and democratic in allowing even NGC-critical threads to run their course. The PCGS boards are, for the most part, an ego-entrenched abyss. I lurk there, and only occasionally contribute as the threads often devolve into NGC-bashing or disappear all together (poof!) if someone says anything even misconstrued as negative against PCGS.
True story. And it's been that way for as long as I can remember and I joined both in 2002 and lurked for a long time before that.
Fair enough sir. I readily admit I was thinking more of the PCGS board when I wrote this, but see a little of it on NGC, at least more than here.
Lmao Brandon. Aside from this forum, I frequent two others. There is some spill over of members on them of course, but each of them are great for different reasons. collectors unleashed numissociety
For input from the experienced error collectors, counterfeit detection, artificial toning and the effects of various chemicals on coins, this forum is hard to beat. There are a lot of advanced collectors and numismatists here - I learn lots reading the various threads. There is a decent Canadian section, on Coin Community Forum. That said, I learn very little there. I find myself trying to steer the novice collectors from the often wrong information and bad advice from some of the postings on there... usually my posts there serve an education purpose on Canadian coins. I would assume though, there is just not enough Canadian content traffic here to warrant a separate forum from the World & Ancient Coins forum. If there was, I would probably spend most of my time here...
I have found that the NGC forum is becoming much more argumentative since it is inheriting the PCGS forum outcasts. In fact, a BNB bashing thread just got nuked on the NGC forum in that last few hours.
While the "zapping" is convenient for your anecdotal point Paul, the NGC site is NO WHERE even close to the same as the PCGS boards. There are probably more threads zapped at PCGS in one day than the NGC site in a month. I have been on the NGC site almost daily for the past 2 years -- the ebb and flow has been pretty similar overall, and the place is a helluva lot more welcoming than the PCGS site. And, far less juvenile and pretentious to boot. In those two years, there have been probably 2-3 people who have joined the NGC boards, filling up an entire page of new threads with nothing other than questions they could have answered by going to Google. Those "types" never seem to stick around for too long...but it's no secret in that small community who those people are. The "one" as of late is supposedly a rocket scientist, but apparently hasn't discovered how to use a search engine. Anyway, I have digressed. In general, I think my two descriptions are pretty true pictures of the state of things on those two sites at least for the last couple years (and I presume long before). In short, I encourage people to shop around on various forums. If I have a world coin question, I'll usually post here at CT, just because I know I'll get a quicker answer, and the range of collectors seems to be more diverse here. If I have question about an NGC submission, it would only make sense to ask on the NGC forum. In my opinion, the Coincommunity.com forum on coin photography is the best of the bunch, so I also spend a lot of time there. In all, there are 5 forums I frequent, the only one I rarely contribute to is the PCGS forum....I guess I'm just not quite one of the "one-percenters" or whatever they think they are over there? LOL
I agree with you in general. I was simply trying to point out the current trend of the NGC forum headed by rocket scientists and AT Peace Dollar collectors.
I was a longtime member of CoinCommunity.com but often found them rude and dismissive, and their site was prone to frequent problems. This is a great forum and a great service - thanks!
