Cody: I am sorry for your experience, but there are jerks in all walks of life. Forget him, and never do business there again. Eventually others will do the same and he will only be able to do mail order, because people won't see his attitude thru the mail. Now go and have fun with others.
I don't think is was a bad thing for Cody to offer bid for the coin. A low counteroffer is part of price negotiations. If the dealer had been a little more accepting of YNs he would have brought the price down to ask or a little below and both dealer and collector would have been happy about the deal. Price negotiation is almost a lost art which is why some used car dealers make so much money! Ziggy
Ziggy I agree, Cody did nothing wrong. The dealer was an idiot the way that he acted. I am glad that Cody walked away.
Might I make a suggestion---next time don't ask what BID is...after he tells you what he is asking just make an offer that is lower! Now don't go so low that it is rude....just maybe 10-15% lower. Also---when they are rude don't state that you will NOT buy the coin---just thank him for his time and nicely hand the coin back. Speedy
Speedy: "So then i asked him how much, he swore under his breath to look it up, and gave me a little over greysheet ask, when i asked for bid, he started lecturing me on how kids should not be let into coin shows because they eat up dealers time. So i flat out told him i didn't want the coin at that point, and then he got p**sed that i wasn't gonna buy it." It sounds like Cody acted after being abused by the dealer. It was the dealer's attitude that stunk.
Sorry to hear that, Cody. Sounds like you responded very well in spite of his rudeness. I probably would have said something else as well.
Karma rules. What do you bet he still has that morgan in his inventory since you didn't buy it? Just out of curiousity, what was the date and grade of the morgan?
Sounds like your in the Illinois area. Do you ever go to all the shows in the Chicago Suburbs? As to dealers like the one you had a problem with, usually best to ignor them. Might be a reason for his attitude. Maybe he was just mad that he has no kids like you so he takes it out on you. If he has kids and they are nuts, crooks, stupid, etc. then of course he wouldn't like an intellegent, coin collecting YN. As to getting things free or cheap due to being a YN, I've noticed that many times. And the younger you are the more you get. I've seen many dealers hand kids coins free. I've seen dealers hand kids coin folders and albums free many times. I've seen complete strangers offer to buy a coin for a kid. I've seen kids walk out of a coin show with so much stuff it makes me want to find a kid to do all my coin buying. Best one I've seen was a dealer talking to a kid about a coin album with about 15 Buffalo Nickels in it. The kid was about 10 years old. The dealer told him to just take it becaue it was taking up to much room on his table. Heard a WOW all over the place. AHHH to be young again.
That is totaly ok---What I was trying to point out is that the nicer us kids are to the dealers the better it will be. Right now most people don't think much of the kids in this day and age. Speedy
