Being that this is ancients, as you all do, I make up my own rules (says the guy who is about to post one of the most popular little side collections in ancients save for maybe the 12 Caesars or the Diadochi). So instead of refering to it as Gallienus Zoo, my collection is going to be Gallienus JUNGLE. Also, this will give me the chance to post a killer Slash guitar solo...Slashienus I've been interested in building this collection for some time, but had seen some crummy coins of the collection go for a considerable amount, due to the popularity I am sure. I had seen a seller, not normally prone to selling coins, excepting offers for several. I pitched my offer...and they excepted! Then just a short while later I spotted a wonderful Indus Valley Fertility Goddess/Idol (posted in @lordmarcovan's funtastic thread https://www.cointalk.com/threads/ancient-but-not-a-coin-artifacts-thread-post-em.307997/) and had seen that seller had a couple animal cracker snacks for me to sink my teeth into. So I picked those up and got a discount (BONUS). Here is a simply amazing write up from Forum for all to read (and a great read it is) https://www.forumancientcoins.com/numiswiki/view.asp?key=Gallienus Zoo So I will not embarrass myself trying to compete with it when it comes to sheer educational material. I will just point out that the reason for the animals is to honor 9 Roman deities. Hence, as you may notice, the inscription thanking these deities. The first that I acquired is not technically part of the Zoo series...but, welcome to the JUNGLE! This is my thread. So here it is: Gallienus, Troas, Alexandreia. AD 253-268. AE (21mm, 5.18g). Sweet. I've been meaning to do that zoo collection myself someday. Fantastic coins. You've got quite a fun little set. Here's a non-zoo coin of his from my collection...but he does have a killer neck beard portrait on my coin.
These are civic issues struck in Alexandria Troas during the time of Gallienus. Funny that the provincial mints were producing much finer coins than the imperial mints during this era...
I’ve always liked this one because it looks like Pegasus has a random extra hind leg (I guess that’s supposed to be a tail, but really looks like a 5th leg to me). I think he’ll fit in well in the jungle.
Nice jungle! I've brought my criocamp along to play. I presume you have fun and games? GALLIENUS AE Antoninianus. 2.89g, 23.5mm. Rome mint, circa AD 267-268. Fantastic, @Ryro ! And I've had a G&R earworm all day! I'm an avid Gallienus collector and have too many to post, so I'll limit this to my favorite Gallienus JUNGLE coin ever! Gallienus ae 28..Lupa Romana..reverse shewolf.pisidia antioch bmc 139 is this a part of the zoo collection?
Great question! They're certainly in the jungle collection...but going with the article from forum it does seem that the purist collector would only except those ants from Rome as part of their zoo collection. But this is part of what I love so much about ancients, we decide what goes into our collections!
Just got this a little while ago. A bit rough but there is decent silvering intact which is more rare in this series in my experience.
