Just checking still wandering over to the piles of oh my God how the hell will I get through this table. This looks like a weak strike? Guessing but there appears to be a capital letter E or B or R at top. Right after trust at hairline Hold or toss?
Sorry but just looks like a well worn die as evidenced by the outward metal flow striations plus damage from a coin counting machine. Keep up the good fight though. Oh, and that hair...it happens all the time with me and my puppy.
I'm curious. Did your grandfather keep all of his change in one big container (jar?) or did he use separate containers for each denomination? Chris
Worse they are all in little envelopes that when my mom died the neighbors decided to empty out and take all the Buffalo nickels and Indian head stuff and anything they thought valueable until we got there and had the police recover a cannister of no buffalo or Indian or silver stuff but it us what it is. So I'm going thru the envelopes and looking at the stacks and trying to organize it somewhat and just halfway lost and halfway having fun. I posted about 1 fifth of what I have as you can see its daunting for a newbie.
Oh my, I so much wish I could help with this. Yes, a very daunting task indeed. It looks like enough was left behind that is good I would suggest a lot of patience. It might be worth your while and expense to invest in the following...a recent copy of the Red Book, and both issues of the Cherry Pickers Guides. You will want to check for varieties amongst these, RPM's, Overdates, Doubled Dies, Repunched Dates (RPD's), Die Cracks, Die Chips, Struck Through Foreign Matter, Laminations, etc. Some folks get overwhelmed with these tasks, suddenly foisted upon them and just end up going to a dealer and getting whatever they can. A lot of sad stories out there. Don't be one of those. This is a wonderful hobby and the possibility of finding one really good coin will easily pay off your investment in a small library of knowledge. By all means, keep us posted and ask away at anything you are not sure off. Best of luck to you.
Brother, another horror story of neighbors and relatives helping themselves to coins. Hate to hear that.
