We often debate grading. I thought this was a solid example of "strong in grade."

All of the people who have so far voiced an opinion regarding the grade of your coin in this thread, 6 and likely 7, not counting me, either agree that the coin is over-graded or a low end 65. The only thing anybody else has said so far is "nice coin", without an opinion on the grade.

Does that prove anything ? No, it doesn't. But I'm going to voice another opinion of mine here, and hopefully you will take this for what it is, constructive criticism, and will learn & benefit from it. You say you think I have a bias against the TPGs. I assure you I do not. What I do have is the ability to keep an open mind and judge every coin I see on an individual and honest basis. But I fear you do not. Ever since you joined this forum I have wondered about it, but I am now pretty much convinced that you suffer from an owner's bias. That you are convinced that the coins that you like or end up buying are nicer than they really are. That can be a dangerous thing for a coin collector. And it is without a doubt the hardest thing there is to overcome in this hobby.

It's an issue that is so common among collectors that one might even say that it is natural to be that way, and perhaps it is. Pride in the things we own and in ourselves is natural I suppose, and all in all not a bad thing. But when it comes to coins, it can be. Am I tough on coins ? You bet I am, and for good reason. I know how easy it is to be swayed by a particular coin, how easy it is to let one aspect put blinders over your eyes so you see only the good and not the bad. Pride and desire are two very powerful forces and it can be a battle to overcome them.

So I would urge you to keep that thought in the back of your mind when looking at coins for your collection. Be more open minded ,more critical, more objective, when looking at coins. And you, and your collection, will be the better for it.

I agree with you on this aspect, Doug. Personally, I feel that with coins, it is a very subjective thing. One man's meat is another's poison. If I have given the opinion that I don't respect your toughness, that is incorrect. The internet doesn't give tone here, and a lot of it is meant to poke fun, and disagree in a humorous way--that is what we are all here for--to learn, disagree and come to a comfortable place with one's own collecting proclivities. I do think you are overly tough, but then again, who am I to criticize? We both have been collecting for years, and view it from different perspectives. However, we are of one accord--ONE SHOULD NEVER buy a coin that they don't think is attractive, and that doesn't please them. This coin I got, I like. Whether or not people think it is low or high in grade doesn't change my liking for it--the toning is what attracted me. I still maintain that it is a 65 in every respect, though I did not pay 65 money for it, ironically (quite a bit lower). Nevertheless, I agree wholeheartedly that we must use our eyes to tell us what is good, what we like, and what we think is graded appropriately for the expenditure we are making. I can assure you that I have been a sensible buyer of Morgans throughout my 40 plus years of collecting, and do trust the TPGs to VINDICATE my own feelings--I don't purchase based on a number on the slab, but my overall impression of the coin, and how it looks to me as a member of my Morgan family. That is my approach, and I doubt that we are that far away from consensus on that much. :)

Postscript---here is the coin with "more light" on it, and a much better exposure, with a high resolution shot (didn't have time for a better picture before):

Looks much more like the 65 that it is in this picture.
