The funniest part is that someone trademarked like 15 of the names they were considering. They'll either have to get that thrown out, get a new name, or pay the person a nice chunk for the trademark

Trademarks can be fairly expensive to acquire. Internet domain names on the other hand are fairly cheap and probably what people snap up first as the return can be pretty high.

I hope they bleed the guy dry in lawyer fees and then just go with a different name.

That's really a horrendous out look on life.

Guy did nothing wrong. They could sue him as you can sue anyone for anything, but he'd win then counter-sue for all his costs and significant damages

If they want the names they can pay him, they have no one to blame but themselves for not thinking ahead when they started all this.

Why is that a horrendous outlook? The guy does nothing to actually build a name that means something but wants to sell a trademark meant to protect a products good name that cost $300 for many many multiples...oh wait that what dealers did on the reverse proof ASE last year...never mind.

Wishing someone to be sued into the ground who did nothing wrong because the team is incompetent, yes that's a horrendous outlook. No one has done anything to build any of those team names.

If anything so far he's done the actual RedTails a favor as they were actually very good at their job and have no ties to DC meanwhile the Redskins are one of the most inept teams in the league and this is just example 600 of why.

If the teams wants one of those names they were to dumb to trademark before running polls and stuff for what the new name should be then they can pay for it. If not they can come up with a new name

The NFL and NFL teams in general are the most aggressive sports league in terms of going after people over licenses and team names and things of that nature even when what the person is doing is legal, zero sympathy for any of them when someone does it back to them

Oh please spare me... the Redskins don't have a good product. It might not be as valuable as the Cowboys or the patriots but why should they pay millions just for the rights to a name for a brand they built over decades?

Their brand was the Redskins. They didn't build the Washington RedTails or the Washington Monuments or any of the other trademarked names. If they want to use a name someone else has the rights too then they can pay up for it, just as the NFL and the teams have said over and over and over again in court with all the people they have gone after.

The difference is that they are protecting their investment both over time and financial investment. The guy who has the name has no actual property or brand to protect and so his actual loss would be the $300 he paid to trademark a straw brand.

Not always. There's many times they've basically just sued people into the ground for things that would/should have fallen under fair use and just didn't have the money to fight it. They claim complete control over a lot more than what their trademarks cover.

And he owns it and can protect the brands he owns as he sees fit. If they want it they can pay for it just as they tell everyone else.

So looking a little into trademark law. It is for brands and logos of products and services. So Joe Schmoe would have to have registered some sort of logo, listed his product and the NFL team would have to conflict with his product or service. As he doesn't have an NFL franchise it would be pretty hard for them to infringe on Joe Schmoe's trademark.

He doesn't need an NFL franchise as it doesn't have to be the exact same thing otherwise NFL teams could steal MLB teams stuff and vice versa or steal things from restaurants and such which they can't

It Is wide ranging see for example the Vegas Golden Knight and some of the challenges they had with naming with college team needing agreements(or appeals)along with the army parachute team and “knights” being out because of a Canadian major Jr team.

So I don’t see a name used in a major sports league or elsewhere in football(roughriders which would have been perfect)
