I use the dollar coins at the Arcade and I use them every time the Bus uses the wrong type of bus on a route I use to work and home.
My wife will be really mad when she goes to the basement and sees my new coin charger for her washing machine!
The dollar coins are the exact same size as the SBAs, as vending machines were already set up to accept that size coin, as noted above by a couple of members. Making it a new size would be pointless. If anything, follow Canada's lead and make a $2 coin next.
It was a result of silly counterproductive laws. The first law required that the machines be able to accept them, then almost immediately afterward they passed a second requiring the owners of the machines to set them to not accept the coins. So they have to be ABLE to accept them but must be set to refuse them. They also have to be equipped to accept paper money. The net result is to actually discourage the use of dollar coins.
I have been dispensing and accepting the dollar coins at my car washes for 8 years now. It was not a huge investment. I have probably put about a million of them in circulation. My oldest vending machines I bought in 1991 were ready to accept them with a flip of a toggle switch. The customers like them much better than having to use gobs of quarters or having to pack home a pocketful that they didn't want because they only had a large bill.
I get to experience that madness at work. For a while our vending machines in the crew lobby accepted dollar coins, bills, and the usual change. Then one day they didn't accept the dollar coins anymore. Oddly enough, if you had a dollar in change due, the machine paid out in dollar coins, but had no device to accept them. Seems counter-productive as we couldnt use our change in the same machine that dispensed it. From then on I used the money changer and just settled with a pocket-full of quarters. Guy~
I do not miss having to use laundromats, it is wonderful to be able to do laundry in my own home. That is a big city thing. I do miss all the good restaurants unfortunately, I haven't had good Thai food in much too long. The dollar bill must be taken out of circulation if they want people to use the dollar coinage and I don't see that happening anytime soon. The other thing is they must change the way men pants are made. I am always losing coins out of my pockets.
