Yes, Paul, it is an MS68FB. I had the luxury of comparing it to two PCGS MS69FB coins of the same date and mint that were also from this small hoard that surfaced about 16-18 years ago and my coin was significantly nicer than either MS69FB. I know, I know..."ownership adds a point", but these MS69FB coins were regraded in 2004-2005 and were in new, blue insert holders. I had seen each at a Baltimore show and each was in the inventory of a very well known and respected dealer. In each instance I asked if I could compare the MS69FB to my coin and in each instance the dealer then asked if he could do the same, too. Oddly enough, in both cases the dealer looked up after viewing both coins and stated that my coin was the nicer and that I should get it regraded. Alas, I am what might be termed "stupid" since I left my coin in its OGH as an MS68FB.
I only have one mercury dime and it's a wartime dime. I picked it up raw at the last ANA show in Ft Worth. It's nothing special, really. Certainly not as impressive as some of the toners in this thread. But I was just going for type - maybe it'll tone up in my Dansco 7070.
I'd say you chose well, Darkhorse, I see no marks on that coin at all. And, the thread didn't have a 'blast white' example yet. Very nice photos!
Seems to me that if you like the OGH, you could simply send it to the CAC for a gold sticker. However, I would still have it regraded before selling. The monetary spread between an MS69 and an MS68 is too great even at 5-6X wholesale which is what the toning premium on your coin would probably be. I bid on the last 1939-D MS69 Mercury that was in auction but was outbid. I remember thinking that it was overgraded due to the very minor mark on the cheek and the few ticks on the band. Was this one of the ones you are talking about. 1939-D 10C MS69 Full Bands PCGS. Ex: Scheppman There is also one in auction right now. The toning is incredible, on par with your example IMO. I won't be bidding on it but it appears to be an incredible coin from the photos. 1939-D 10C MS69 Full Bands PCGS Feel free to post that coin as often as you want. That coin is up there with the Sunnywood 1881-S Morgan in terms of eye appeal IMO.
My dime went to CAC with many of my other coins and received their green sticker. I'll have to check out the coins in the links.
I have an extra digital I would be willing to part with.it works pretty good if interested PM me.this way we can get you back up & running.
love all the new pictures………my name says it all…..absolutley love seeing these beautiful coins that everybody has to share
Wow, Dimefreak, that one is virtually pristine! Beautiful color, especially that pale lemon-lime which one rarely sees on these. A showstopper!
