Folks want these old pages because they have a history of producing some pretty toned coins. I'll guess they had a high sulfur content in the cardboard.
And the key word is" had"....as I'm sure that the sulfur has long since gone from these boards. Weren't these from the late 40'-50's time frame?
Nowadays if people want a better holder for the War Nic set they get the Capital Plastics one. Very nice but you won't end up with toners.
I don't know about when they were made but the 40s and 50s sounds right. There was a lot of talk of the sulfur being gone but some said it was still in the cardboard. Never got to see the results but some were playing with them. They would sand the holes a bit to expose fresh cardboard and fill them with freshly dipped silver coins. Next they were stored in a warm humid place. I'll guess they got more ugly coins than pretty ones. All this was about 15 years back. I have a set of these for early commemoratives but never put any coins in them. Too much money to risk. Cool old holders.
I bought this set way back when Yahoo had auctions. Kept it ever since then. I put into the safety box.
