I searched the Net but couldn't find the definition of a "rattler morgan". Could someone explain what it is? thank you.
The term rattler refers to the slab. They are early (might be 1st) generation PCGS holders that were made of hard plastic. The coins were not secured by an insert like present day slabs and the coins would shift inside the holder making a rattling sound. The font on the label was like an early computer printout.
Here is link to one in auction on E-Bay. http://cgi.ebay.com/1882-S-PCGS-MS63-Morgan-Dollar-Rattler_W0QQitemZ220386032760QQihZ012QQcategoryZ39465QQssPageNameZWD4VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em124

The term "rattler" can be used for any of the first five holder varieties from PCGS but is generally reserved for just the first one (PCGS 1). The next two are slab in a slab (PCGS 2 and 2.5), and the fourth variety is the famous Doilie holder (PCGS 3). The fifth one doesn't really have a name because almost no one knows it exists. It is a mule type. It is a slab in a slab holder with the die cut label. The first of the true PCGS green labels. They are very tough to find and were probably used for just a few days. The PCGS 1 is the most common rattler, PCGS 3.5 the rarest, but PCGS 3 is the most popular and therefor almost as hard to find.
