We get counterfeits at work at least once a week. Usually in the 20 and 100 dollar denominations. Being a currency collector and in security I get to see every note that is confiscated.

At the beginning of September I arrived at work as usual. When I sat down at my desk I noticed another counterfeit currency report. Attached to it was the counterfeit 50 dollar note in an evidence baggie. Upon closer examination I informed my superiors that the note was not counterfeit. The first question I asked was, "Did anyone bother to notice the date on this note? It was a 1950 50 dollar note. It was still in pretty good shape, a few folds and no major wrinkles. The person who tested the note had marked it all up with that detection pen. I cried inside as I am sure it would have been worth more than face value. I am no expert by any means, but I've gotten pretty good at detecting counterfeits. When I told my boss the note was real, her reply was, "perhaps the owner can get it back and we can issue an apology." I offered to talk to the head of some of the departments that directly handle money to teach these young people a thing or two about old currency, what it looks like, and what it feels like. More importantly no security strip feature before the 1990s. ( that I can recall anyways ) At a casino, you never know what people will pay with. So far I've been able to collect a 1906 D Barber Half dollar, and a 1928S SLQ. It pays to know the cage directors. ( I work at a casino )
