But a pheasant is not a native American bird. There was a series of pattern coins that were struck for India in 1949,but they were rejected on the grounds that the Brahman bull depicted on one piece was native to Pakistan,& the peacock depicted on another Indian pattern piece was native to Burma. If someone wanted to depict an American bird, why not the Blue Jay,which sounds like the Toronto baseball team (the Toronto Bluejays).
I like No. 4. I would think that 95 percent of anyone asked would say Mt. Rushmore when thinking of SD. Two summers back we visited both Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Monument. If the coin were larger, like a half dollar, it would be great to have Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and a buffalo.
I like Mt. Rushmore but I wouldn't reccommend it. Remember what happened to "the old man on the mountain" after New Hampshire placed that image on it's coin.
Number one should win. They gotta have Mount Rushmore!! Adding the Buff or Pheasant would clutter the design too much. There probably will not be too much debate over this one. Here's the real toughie: What about NORTH Dakota??
North Dakota would have a length of barbed wire and a telephone pole. The wire to show what is between them and the North Pole, and the telephone pole because it is the "state tree".
