I've haven't used any perpetual AV in over 12 years. I know that some have had good luck with them, but I know plenty of others who haven't. When I did use Norton's, et al. years ago I got the occasional virus. I still get the occasional virus, but haven't had one yet that I couldn't take care of on my own. The only thing that runs perpetually on my system is a free software that uses miniscule resources and it tells me anytime something is trying to hook my keyboard or view my screen and it asks me if I would like to block the offender. I would recommend this software to anyone, even if you do use an AV. The good thing with this software, is that the virus doesn't have to be known. ANYTHING that tries to log your keystrokes will be detected. You'll still be on your own as far as figuring out what it is and getting rid of it, but you'll never have the issue of someone logging your keystrokes or viewing your screen. It's called SnoopFree and you can download it here:

Hey, I had to be drug kicking and screaming away from my Windows 98 platform and into xp. But yes, hopefully they will put out a version soon that covers Vista so that I can get my wife's laptop covered.

Just keep in mind, that this is a bare bones program. Some completely harmless applications need to view your screen and this program doesn't tell you what's harmless and what's not...all it tells you is that so-and-so is trying to do something that could capture your private information.

Eye - what you don't understand is this. When I click on one of your images the only thing that tells me there is a problem (a virus warning) is a big Red X that appears in the toolbar. And for about 2 seconds a small pop-up window from Norton about 1 inch square opens on my screen. Then that pop-up window disappears. But if I click on that Red X in the toolbar it generates a report to explain what the virus warning is. The report that is generated is what I posted an image of for you.

The reason I though that your account had been hacked is because when I viewed any other image hosted on Photobucket, I got no virus warning at all.

Now you tell me - if you clicked on person A's picture that was hosted on Photobucket and got a virus warning, and then when you checked all of person A's other images hosted on Photobucket and you got the same virus warning - but when you checked person B's pictures, and person C's pictures, and person D's pictures (all hosted on Photobucket) and got no virus warning at all - what would you think ?

Wouldn't you think that person A's account had been hacked and infected with a virus ? Here you are and you have 1 Photobucket account that generates virus warnings. And no other Photobucket account out of 8 or 10 others that you check generates any warning at all. I think that any reasonable person would think the very same thing.

Would someone explain in layman terms how I could know if my computer has a virus? Having just read in previous post about someone capturing keystrokes, well how in the world do they do that? How might my computer act if it had a virus? I have some serious data on my computer, and now I wonder if I should remove it all?

LucyRay, viruses can be transmitted to a computer by various means, most often by the internet, but also from homemade CDs or someones USB memory stick, etc., with the internet being the most often. Sometimes it can be sent by an offer on a site to check your computer for something, such as a virus :), if you click on it, it will actually install a virus. They can come by email, appearing as a message from a bank, class reunion, "someone is looking for you" type of message, and even chain mail letters sent by innocent but unaware people. There are far many more ways to send than can be eliminated and still use the internet, so a virus/antispyware checker is needed, preferably a couple. If a scanner doesn't work or freezes, it may be a virus on the system already inactivating it.

Here is an url, that has free scanner packages, and it well supported and clean.

I would pick Malwarebytes antimalware as a first try. It is the one I install on my church members computers if they are unaware. I would always update the database before running. If it shows no bad stuff ( malware), you are probably clean. They recommend using at least 2.

Malwarebytes is an excellent program and one that I highly recommend. I was surfing one nite about a year and a half ago when up popped a message that said my computer was infected and I needed to scan for virus's pronto. The message was so convincing I thought it was my computer sounding the alarm. It wasn't. When I hit the scan button everything went haywire. I could hardly keep ahead of the nonsense that was going on...pop-ups all over the place. A friend recommended Malwarebytes and it was the only thing that could eradicate the bug. AVG was useless. Looking back on it I think it was that Lizamoon thingo. Taught me a lesson though. Anytime I see a message like that (and I have from time to time) I kill the site and run Malwarebytes.

False alarm thanks to Nortons, which is an anti-virus program that can't figure out that you can't insert the Bloodhound virus into an image.

Most experts disagree with you. Did you not click on this link - http://www.virustotal.com/file-scan...da4cae0a6ed3f6c6fba34bd27d92d78398-1302953734 - 17 out 41 anti-virus programs report that the image I linked to previously DOES contain a virus. But you can believe that it doesn't if you wish.

And for what it's worth, even the techs at Photobucket agree that the image is malicious.

Doug - that is an animated .gif and has absolutely nothing to do with me and everything to do with your software settings.

Quit screaming fire, when you smelled smoke in the theater? Okay? Thanks...
