I get the same error doug does - from my nortons. Only had 1 virus in all my years of surfing - that one was a pain to clean up. Since then my cable modem gets turned off the minute I see something fishy. I also routinely delete everything in IE - including the cookies for this site(and others). Oh well - I checked some of my pictures and they did not give me the same error.

    lol photobucket lies.

Not sure if I will change hosting services and I most certainly am not going to host my own images and open up a whole nother can of worms.

what is most interesting is that if you search this particular Bloodhound virus there is all kinds of chatter going back 2 years but nothing ever seems to come from it.

oh duh... lol you guys blocked every thing photobucket? anyways go to the photobucket blog if anyone is interested.

I still don't think the log-in issues have anything to do with Norton AV false positives. Norton has had this issue for much longer than PB has had log-in issues. This is a coincidence.

They won't post my comments/questions regarding the virus and I was polite about it!

and just to repeat, the images are clean, its just that photobucket links are triggering some peoples virus protection to produce warnings.

I'm off to go to some photography forums and see whats happening on them.

Your images are definitely clean. If anyone here thinks they can find/create a jpeg image that contains a virus, then pm and I'll give you my email address so you can send it to me. I'll guarantee you not one person can find a jpeg image infected with a virus.

I'll tell you what is starting to bug me out now. Everywhere I look, there is chatter about denial of service, broken links etc. it appears that a lot of people were hurt bad, eBay sales etc.

BUT.... I CAN NOT FIND anywhere anything about anyone having any problems with current virus pop ups as a result of viewing or clicking a photobucket image except on here.

There are facebook pages for example: http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=52045600631&topic=16334#topic_top nothing about any virus

    That seems strange.

I personally love free software and have had the best results with Microsoft Security Essentials. I have been using it about 6 months. When I first installed it, it found a small list of problems I didn't know that I had and cleaned them out. I noticed my laptops performance increase immediately back to out of the box fast. It has informed me plenty of times when something has attempted to effect my computer. It is free and updates itself frequently, anyone wishing protection for free should get it!

quite to the contrary, Jeff, you really do know what you're talking about. My rant was more about addressing the casual "it's impossible" mentality than anything else. I do not work with macs very often and so I will always defer when it comes to macs.

Your advice is quite solid and to tell the truth to lucy, I couldn't recommend an anti-virus program for mac that I really felt improved her security, and so I won't. I just wanted people to walk in the online world with their eyes wide open

Yes. I chose Avast and can only say that it seems to be updating more frequently than any of the other programs I have used.

Currently I use a MacBook with OS X (as my default computer so to say), and a netbook with Windows XP (primarily when I travel). With the latter I use a commercial "security suite" which some may consider overkill, but heck, I don't know much about how Windows works and want to be on the pretty safe side. On the Mac I use a free virus scanner called ClamXav. Why?

Not because I am worried about "Mac specific" attacks but because of the cross-platform issues that Jeff mentioned and which may indeed be harmful on Macs as well. Also, I may get mail messages with attachments from Windows users. I there is anything nasty in such an attachment, it will in general not do any harm to my Mac. But in case I ever get a complaint about having spread a virus, I want at least to be able to reply, look, I scanned that attachment before forwarding it. ;)

(Side note: Neither Macs nor smartphones are "immune per definition" ...)

I just downloaded that software about three days ago. I ran a scan and nothing untoward popped up. Still, nice to add another layer of protection.

    The latest from Photobucket:

    "
    Maintenance Update

    Photobucket customers,

Thank you all for your continued patience while we work persistently on this issue. While this is still affecting only a very small percentage of our users, we realize it is a big issue for those impacted. We’d like to give you a current update as we continue to work night and day on resolving this issue.
In order to clarify and dispel some concerns, let me assure you that Photobucket has not been hacked, but instead we are working through a hardware issue. Right now, we’re continuing the process of going through an extended diagnostic and recovery process.
We understand your frustrations, and promise you that we are doing everything we can to bring everything back on line as quickly as possible. However, we do feel it best to advise the affected users that this process is highly unusual and time consuming.

Thank you for your patience, and for all your feedback.

    Yours,

    Jim Goss
    VP of Operations"

Is this why I can't upload any of my photobucket pictures lately?

I use Kaspersky ( one of the largest update library always) and several others as needed, but for those who have sleepless nights thinking about viruses going through your computer might look at this free product. It establishes a "virtual machine" to isolate any new programs, downloads, etc. in a bubble which doesn't reach your other program areas. The programs in such an environment are surrounded by a red boarder. So you can go to "dangerous sites, download from Romania, chat with "suzette who found your photo on facebook and thinks you are hot, etc. and keep those applications from your online banking.

Read about it before you install, but seems to fulfill its promises.

its has to be into the thousands if not tens of thousands. anyone can view images here with out being a member or logging in.

Good golly people... when an image is posted here on Coin talk by methods of linking to an image (IMG tags wrapped around a URL) you are looking at a website within a website.

It really shouldn't make a difference when you click on the image. You are already viewing that image. the way I understand it, when you click on an image and it opens in a new tab, that is a browser function.

To understand what I am talking about. Right click on any webpage that is image intensive, click "view page source" and you will see all kinds of other links in that page. On a coin talk page that has a photobucket image you will see the link to photobucket that looks like http:www.photobuck.eyeeatwheats.jpg for example..

Here is one that I grabbed very quickly off of this current webpage as an example [IMG]

While I am no expert, I am starting to think that while something did happen at photobucket to trigger some members virus warnings - there is no evidence of this happening anywhere else that I can find.

So therefore, I am starting to believe that this might be a coin talk problem and not photobucket?

Do you have a pro account? The virus problem that Doug posted about, apparently does not have anything to do with Photobucket upload and hosting issues. Seems an unlikely coincidence though. except as mentioned previously, I have not been able to find any other message boards who are having problems with virus warnings. SO it may only be related to cointalk.

I should add that I email pictures on a regular basis to hundreds and no one has ever replied that my images are infected.
