that is a nice rebel coin, good score Alegandron. i still need an Otho of that period. here's my Galba denarius, he will remain entombed for the duration of his stay in my collection
Were it not for a decision by Suetonius not to write 13 biographies, your new coin could have been worth ten times the price. As it is you got a coin which a few of us would really love to have and a few others would never understand why anyone would want a coin with no portrait. Who has a non-portrait Galba or Vitellius that would go well with Vindex? I have long wanted them, too.

I was "all about the portraits" in my "A-to-Z" (Augustus to Zeno) set and subsequently in my second Roman (12 C) set, but nowadays, since becoming more "eclectic", I can appreciate the non-portrait coins more. (Mind you, I always respected them- just didn't collect them. And tough, scarce stuff like this OP coin always turned me on, regardless.) My first criterion was always a good portrait. Second was a clear name on the flan. But nowadays I go for more interesting reverses and stuff like that when I can. When I buy Roman coins, that is. My current holdings make a pretty small handful. Still find it all fascinating, though.
My non-portrait Vespasian is absolutely my favourite coin. Vespasian AR Denarius, 2.84g Rome mint, 74 AD RIC 688 (R), BMC 147, RSC 569 Obv: IMP CAESAR in exergue; Vespasian stg. r., with branch and sceptre, in quadriga r. Cue the Dos Equis "Most Interesting Man In The World" meme. "I don't always buy Roman coins, but when I do..."
@Alegandron, that is a fantastic piece! Civil Wars of 68-69 Clasped Hands Civil Wars of 68-69 AD AR denarius. 3.49 g. Minted by pro-Vitellian forces in Southern Gaul. O: FIDES EXERCITVVM, two clasped hands. R: FIDES PRAETORIANORVM, two clasped hands. -BMC 65; Martin 7; RIC² 121, Ex Jonathan P. Rosen, Ex Auktion Myers/Adams 7, New York 1974, Nr. 269. The message of a unified fidelity, or loyalty, of the 'armies' (FIDES EXERCITVVM) and the praetorians (FIDES PRAETORIANORVM) would only be an effective propaganda tool if it was distributed among the praetorians. David R Sear, writing in RCV, agrees with Kraay (Num. Chron 1949, pp 78.) that this interesting, anonymous civil war issue was produced on behalf of Vitellius, to be used as 'bribe money' to suborn the soldiers, as well as the Praetorian Guard, loyal to Otho in the capital. "In March 69 AD, Vitellian commander Fabius Valens entered Italy from Southern Gaul at the head of a small band of secret agents. Their mission was to infiltrate the capital, especially the ranks of the Praetorians, with the object of disseminating pro-Vitellian propaganda and dissociating the guards from their allegiance to Otho. These coins, struck in advance in Southern Gaul, would thus have played a vital role as 'bribe money'. Despite these covert activities, the Praetorians remained loyal to their Emperor, though all was to be for naught, as the following month, the invading army of Vitellius was victorious at the battle of Bedriacum, and Otho took his own life" - David R Sear @david, that is a once in a lifetime catch. I was an underbidder but mistakenly brought a knife to a gunfight....
Awesome OP coin! Guess I can share my Alexandrian tetradrachm of Galba: And a denarius of Vespasian with his two sons:
Now THAT is a cool Vespasian! Add in Iulia Titi, and it would have been "All in the Family" for Uncle Dom!
Excellent catch, @Alegandron! Since I'm collecting a Julian the Apostate '46 Caesars' set, I need a Vindex as he was mentioned in that one . Very jealous of your new pickup, congrats!
I have all 4 from that year, but I will just post my 2 favorites. Both are in the Best of Type gallery on Forvm. Galba Vespasian
