Kick ass! I really like this concept. Just a few here, yes, I did indeed leave the music in the background. Its what I listen to and how I work every day. Pink Floyd never knew this song was meant for Korn! But, music aside, coins kick butt! Please, post your videos!
when i saw the edge view of that AP coin my eyes got pretty wide! that's awesome how thick that is, definitely beats just a pic on that one!
That's great, Chris! Video to show the coin "in hand", labels, and closing with a still shot-- perfect The editing time and digital storage space might be an obstacle for routine use. How long did this take, from shooting to editing to posting on YouTube?
Great video, @chrsmat71! I've seen some of those Sassanian coins for sale but I was unaware how thin they are. That would not discourage me from purchasing one however.
I have never been a fan of the 'in fingers' style of stills but I have not yet taken a video worth seeing that did not include fingers to provide the tipping necessary. Just like taking stills, this will require a lot more work to learn the tricks. I do think it makes the coins look more appealing so it will benefit sellers who learn. I am just starting to play with editing tools. I wish I could crop/zoom in. The one below was postprocessed by darkening just a bit from 'as shot' and I copied and pasted just to show I could. These are not ready to make me into a You Tube star and that is most certain.
Hard to argue against that. Some of my favourite coins are ones that are not catalogued anywhere and were unknown until I stumbled across them.
I'm enjoying the video too. Occasionally, when I am bored, I will troll along youtube and search up coin searches and view videos of others collections. Not too many ancients though, except metal detecting/dig videos.
not long really, about 30 minutes i would guess. i could probably get it down to 10-15 minutes with practice...about the same amount of time it takes me to edit pictures. i'm not going to practice much more until i get a better camera/phone, i'm at max resolution with what i did and it doesn't look nearly as nice as everyone vids. i just did it it windows movie maker, but i used VSDC video editor to convert some file formats. in the future i'd just use it i think, but i'm still kind of learning how to use it....but lots of nice options. http://www.videosoftdev.com/ this is a pretty accurate review i'd say. http://www.techadvisor.co.uk/download/audio-video-photo/vsdc-free-video-editor-578721-3329647/
I've shot a handful of coin videos in the last day, all with an iPhone. I'm using a basic video editor called VideoPad. The first attempt was this Siculo-Punic tet. In subsequent attempts I moved the coin around a bit more and also capture side shots. Here's Philip II tet. I wish I'd zoomed a little bit or else had the ability to crop the video (maybe VideoPad can do that... I haven't explored). I added a brief description which displays throughout. This coin has abundant iridescence in the full spectrum of colors so a video is much better than a still image for displaying this coin's virtues. [Video edited to fix a typo; reuploaded with new URL] Video seems to do a good job of flattering large silver coins so I tried shooting this somewhat beat up Odessos tet. It too looks better in video. I shot a couple of bronzes but haven't edited them yet. Looking at the raw video... shiny dark bronze does not lead to flattering video. Tilted towards the light makes the devices stand out but creates glare; without direct light it's hard to see much of anything. Chris's inclusion of the still images at the end of his video is a good idea. I'll do that next time. Suggestions for improvement are welcome.
Yeah, that looks pretty awesome TIF! That's exactly what I wanted my vids to look like. I'm digging the videos! I like that you instantly get an idea of the size of the coin. I dig that you can show off the edge and relief. May be easier to see toning on silver. Shouldn't be much more difficult than doing pics (if any). Bandwidth shouldn't really be a problem much anymore, and if it is YouTube automatically adjusts the resolution accordingly. I'm definitely going to check this out more. @TIF how long did it take you to put those vids together, edit, and post? How does that compare with how long it took you to do you pics of the same coins?
I didn't time it but I'd say it takes only slightly longer than taking still images and editing them. However, I don't plan on having videos replace still images-- they will be in addition to the still images. That's okay though. It's all part of the fun
@Ken Dorney: the side lighting over the box made the details pop. Very interesting. I actually like that presenation better than the 'in hand' closer to the light. btw, 'Money' by Pink Floyd would've work well, too
