Instead of a cult statue in the <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cella" target="_blank" class="externalLink ProxyLink" data-proxy-href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cella" rel="nofollow">cella</a></i>, there was a hearth in the temple which held a sacred flame. The vestals' chief duty was to keep the eternal fire burning, each taking her turn in watching.
