Very very off center pre-1982 penny

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by Paul Broccardi, Jan 16, 2017.

  1. XD Found this on the floor of a pizza place. Someone must've thought it was worthless! I know it's a pre-1982 copper penny but that's about it. any idea on its value?

  3. also there is some obvious doubling on the reverse but I'm not sure if that's just a side effect of the off center strike or something different.

Yes.. If it's a plated Cent the plating will be shifted and the doubling appearance will occur.
If not plated copper zinc then it's a smear.

I can confirm that I paid something like that for something like this. Maybe a couple bucks less.

Weird. Back in the 80s there was a coin shop that had a display case of these. Thousands of them. He was selling them for something like .25 cents each. He told me they were worthless. If I'd have known they would become valuable I'd have bought as many as I could have. lol

Many collectors (of anything) place a subjective (personal) value on an item's story/history (provenance). Sometimes an item's provenance adds objective (market) value. These finds are great, and although the market values may seem insignificant, the stories of the finds (I hope) add significant personal value.
