I fairly new to collecting coins don't really know what to say about this penny, yeah a loss for words does anybody else have any ideas of what this is, obviously it's a 2013 D penny but I've never seen one turn black like this and it looks like it was smashed. it's just a tiny bit bigger than the rest of my pennies, yet the collar ring isn't smashed down with the rest ? .....
It's a "Texas Cent"...... The coin has had the copper plating removed, and it was also pressed in a vise or something similar, to enlarge it; i.e.; Texas Cent. It's PMD - Post Minting Damage. It did not leave the Mint like that. Sorry.....
But it's really strange how it is pressed because Where the collar would go around it on both sides is still raised if it was put in a vice or something to smash it down the edges would be pushed down or slightly damaged but they are perfect
A penny is placed between two pieces of leather and beaten with a hammer/mallet, or pressed in a vise, causing the coin's diameter to enlarge and its thickness to be reduced.
