Race - Yes, I certainly agree its frustrating you cant neg some deadbeat buyer who flaked out. I had the guy even threaten in a real smart a way that if I filed an ebay case he would pay and then return it (probably with a neg). I always think about giving him a neg thru my buyer acct by buying something from him (but have not seen anything he is selling). I have him blocked on my seller acct. Yes, a collector is probably getting more on his coins on the bay than a shop except possibility bullion with the 12% selling costs on the bay. I would check what the shop offers relative to melt to make that decision. On bullion coins I have seen show dealers offer at least 97% of melt. This may be better deal than your bay proceeds less the 12% ebay - paypal take. Man does ebay clean up.
I have sold on many venues and they all to some extent have bad sellers/buyers. I've settled on eBid.net. They have very low (or no) fees and if a buyer/seller gets retallitory neg. feedback, they can appeal to ebid and if justified, they will remove the neg. You can also edit/ammend your feedback. The only problem with ebid at the moment is that there is not nearly the traffic that ebay has so the sales are slower. This is OK with me as I only sell as a hobby and don't really need the income. Might give them a try.
