These two are not in the Cherrypicker's Guide. Anyone know what they are? @Paddy54 1. 1878 Die Dot (?) on neck. 2. 1893 Repunched Date. Personally, I CANNOT BELIEVE this one isn't in the CPG. It's so bold!
I can't find my Snow book, but it is likely in there, on the RPD. The dot may not be, it looks like a die chip
Question: On the 1878 cent the date goes strait across while the date on the 1893 cent more or less follows the curve of the edge of the coin. Is this just proving my ignorance of a common variation?
The date punches were prepared each year and vary in size and orientation. From 1872-1880 the date goes straight across. 1859-1871 and 1882-1909 is curved. 1881 is a bit jumbled. Usually, date punches aren't shared across denominations, but this isn't necessarily always true.
Away from my reference books. Could the RPD be Snow 11, RPD-011 per a web site without photo documentation of variety. The description of the variety states Initial Impressions of Date To the North of the 3.
Ah yes, the 1878 Unsightly Neck Growth variety. ...joking aside that’s a really nice, wholesome-looking coin.
I hoped for that, but there's a guy with a low grade one on eBay whose Snow 20 1893 is a perfect match for mine, (assuming he's right). In any case, mine is an easy MS64 RB. I just need to acetone a couple green specks off it with a soak. I'll show it to Rick Snow at the ANA next week.
My 1893 is also a MS-64 RB but I don't know what (if any) Snow variety it is. I didn't take any images of it and it's out of reach for now (safe deposit box). And I won't see Rick until the November Baltimore Whitman Show.
The 1878 “Goiter Neck” is fairly common. Not hard to find one. This one is from an auction last year.
