Just because nobody else mentioned it ANACS has a 10 coins for $119 deal going for about 10 more days. Though with the new ebay rules on TPGs going into effect shortly they won't carry as much if any premium if sold there.
ANACS has a rep at some local shows. He mails your coins to get graded at no charge. The $119 deal includes free shipping back to you. So all you pay is $11.90 per coin.
Yes pcgs and ngc are more liquid (easier to sell for top dollar) However, ANACs will grade coins the others won't such as non-top 100 VAMS and problem/detail coins. They also (IMHO) grade a coin more properly as to it's condition while PCGS bases their grades on how much the coin can be sold for. NGC is in the middle of the 2. Again just my opinion
My advice to you would be get the Guide Book of Franklin & Kennedy Half Dollars by Rick Tomaska. It's a well written book with an incredible amount of valuable information in it.
so send the good stuff to NGC? and the stuff im not sure about to ANACS? ive got 10 ATB quarters in containers that SHOULD grade well........and yes in time i want top dollar for em-im saving all this stuff for my daughter after i get planted
My experience in the market suggests strongly that those who utilize cheaper ANACS fees are penny wise and pound foolish.
Yes there are folks who despise ANACS and would never stoop so low as to buy or touch a coin in ANACS plastic. However for common stuff such as Franklins it just isn't worth it to "join" PCGS or NGC or pay their higher fees. An average low budget collector who isn't in the market to sell and just wants authentication should be ok with the lower cost TPG. The coin can't be worth more than $500 for the ANACS deal. Keep in mind the coin show reps ship your coins for free. And the fall special includes free return shipping.
Well Im looking to the future when im gone and my daughter has all these POUNDS AND POUNDS of silver..........i want the best for her
My response has nothing to do with "stooping" to ANACS and has everything to do with acknowledging current market dynamics that have been in place for many years and show no signs of changing anytime soon. PCGS and NGC have a broader base of support in the marketplace than ANACS, which more than offsets the incrementally higher price to get a coin certified through these companies.
I've bought NGC for a majority of my slabbed coins. On occasion I've found a slabbed PCGS coin that to me, was the right price. I am collecting several different ways. I will pass my collection on to my daughter providing she has interest when she is older. Right now I am concentrating on the Morgan dollars. Attempting to collect in AU or UNC condition. And as you know this can get very pricey.
Oh do i ever just started in on them myself. Has been a major learning experence and so far i've been lucky a couple times I chanced to buy my 2nd Morgan and it turned out to be a rare (r6)1890-p vam 15a(which was pointed out to me by a CT member). I decided for the 1st time I had a coin that actualy rated getting slabbed. I started by reading all 3 TPG sites and faqs, read ALOT of very useful information here about all 3 and after 3 phone calls, only ANACs would/could certify this VAM. It made my choice of which to use simple in this case. I've still got a 66 ddo kennedy half I'm considering haveing slabbed for a similar reason but as I am considering selling this one I will probably send it to one of the other 2 (after a 60 mile drive to a dealer that can submit it because i'm too cheap to join either)Yes it will cost me almost as much in gas but it's also and excuse to get to a good coin shop lol.
I have an 1878 7/8 TF that's been slightly cleaned. ( NO I didn't clean it.) The strike on it is pretty good and by all accounts is a great example. I just wish whoever cleaned it in the past didn't. I am currently pricing UNC examples of this type of Morgan. If I keep the cleaned example, I may just end of putting it in a coin album.
