When the elder Valentinian died on a campaign in Pannonia in AD 375, the generals acclaimed four-year-old Valentinian II augustus, without consulting Valens or Gratian. The reverse legend is highly abbreviated REI - PVBL[] instead of the longer REIPVBLICE, as the small flan couldn&#039;t account for a full legend.
