Ooops, I thought this thread was an LRB free-for-all ... I didn't realize that it was a Valens-only party (my bad) => well, sadly I only have one very humble "tick that ruler" Valens example ... oh, thank God => it is an LRB toga-party (*phew*) Nice coins, everybody
It's not a Ae, my point of interest is only Siliquae. This one is a exceptional rarity, struck by the second officina of the mint of Roma, and found in England, declared with the PAS. NotInRic, NotInRsc, I never see another coin of this issue. And take a look on the job of the engravor, "sublime" ! Silique, 364-378, R5 A/ D N VALEN-S P F AVG Dominus Noster Valens pius Felix Augustus, Notre maître Valens Pieux et Heureux Auguste Buste à droite, drapé et cuirassé, tête diadémée (Perles). This is a DN GRATIANVS AVG G AVG obverse legend, of which the best known type is GLORIA NOVI SAECVLI rather than DN GRATIANVS PF AVG. DN GRATIAN - VS AVG G AVG / GLORIA RO - MANORVM / O - F - II / LVGS RIC Lyon 20c xxii b DN GRATIANVS AVG G AVG / GLORIA NO - VI SAECVLI / TCON / RIC Arles 15 xiv c (I just noticed this is a thread from 2016, sorry for the faux pas )
Here is an illustrated type set of Gratian's AE types: http://augustuscoins.com/ed/ricix/Gratian.html This one is one of the rarest. Gratian VICTORIA AVGGG AE4. 14 mm. 6:00. 1.27 grams. RIC Rome 30 "R4"
My only coin minted in Rome after 350 -- and I have only a handful of post-350 ancient coins in the first place, since in general they don't much appeal to me aesthetically -- happens also to be a Valens, although it's not a bronze. Valens, AR Siliqua, 364-367, Rome Mint. Obv. DN VALEN-S PF AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right / Rev. VOT- V- MV dot LT- X in four lines within wreath. In exergue: Mintmark RB. RIC IX Rome 10c, RSC V 91(h) (ill.). 17 mm., 2.00 g. From 1887 East Harptree hoard.
It's an AE4 of Constans minted in the 340s (a broad ballpark would be ca. 342-348), not worth much in terms of dollars but interesting in terms of it being a historical artefact.
