My understanding of the purpose of the Mint's general mission in selling to the public is to generate profits which then offsets the expenses of making coins and currency which would otherwise require our tax dollars. The Mint is very rare in terms of Federal Agencies in that it is a "Self Sustaining" Agency of the Federal Government. The Mint also recently raised their prices on a lot of common collectors items. That's another reason why it is upsetting. They could have made a LOT of money on these 2 coins. But they gave that profit to Flippers and eBay instead. And then we, collectors, are left paying higher prices for the Mint's standard stuff. <sigh>
I got a order acknowledgment on the gold at 12:03, and a confirmation at 1:00. However, the the pending charge is no longer on my credit card. The order is still listed as processing at the Mint. I've read elsewhere where this turned into a cancellation. My silver order acknowledgment was at 12:12. Yesterday, it listed as shipped on the mint, but the tracking number shows only the label has been printed.
I stayed up late to get lucky, but alas it didn't work. No gold 1 ounce for me, but did score the gold 1/2 ounce today.
I got a gold and a silver with two individual orders. Logged in around 11:30 and updated my profile to make sure the credit card and shipping address were up to date. Started around 11:58 trying for the gold. Was able to put one in the cart around 12:01 and after identifying around a few bikes/buses/boats I got to the order confirmation screen. It took a few times of getting the something went wrong screen before I received a purchase confirmation at 12:03. Then tried for the silver and it took maybe 15 minutes and had to re-identify about a zillion bikes/buses/boats before I got the order confirmation screen. I also got one of the WW2 gold 1/2 ounce today. Didn't start trying until 12:06 and got the order confirmation at 12:12. No captcha this time. Unlike many people suggestion, I doubt there is anything nefarious with how the mint dispersed these coins. Some people were lucky and others weren't.
That's great! You really did get lucky! Can I ask, what internet program did you use? Chrome? Internet Explorer? Other? Or did you use a cellphone? If so, what phone?
Chrome on a desktop computer. I think where some people went wrong was hitting the refresh as fast as they could and they got blocked. I waited until I go the something went wrong refresh button screen before I tried to refresh. I still think it is pure luck. I went 3-for-3 this week, but I've gone 0-for-many in the past.
No. I did come close a few days after initial release at 4:30 AM EST. Had the "Confirm Order" button appear, and 10 times it would send me back to the financial section. Close but no cigar.
Maybe the refresh button messed things up. Who knows. Am happy for you that you got it. At least someone on CT did and not just a dealer or some insider.
