Thanks for the great support! The nicest V nickel I have is a 1910 in XF which I bought for $25.00. I have some others that are crappy to Fine. Any questions on the subject of V nickels? One of the most interesting rare coins is the 1913 V nickel. Only 5 were made and one just sold for over $3 million dollars. This is still far from the 1794 dollar that just sold for $7.85 million. These coins are cheap in low grades from the 1900's except for the 1913 and 1912 S. vnickels
I have a few V-nickels that remain from the unlost part of my collection... Nothing too great, though.
I've got several. Bought several for a dollar each in VG/F condition. Got this one a bit overpriced but I liked it. These pictures really dont do it justice either. It looks much, much better in person. Its one I haven't gotten around to with my new camera.
I own several V Nickels, and I was planning on using them for one of my Coin Outta The Vault series threads...but I guess I'll take some photos of um' and paste them here ASAP. Great thread so far. Always have loved this design, I remember looking at proofs about two years ago, saying to myself I'd never own one, and now I could if I wanted to. It's funny how times change. Although my nickels ain't as nice as the ones here, or the ones I've dreamed about I have AG nickels! Hoorah!
These coins were true "workhorses" and wildly circulated into the 50s (I personally can attest to that). They lived in an era when 5 cents bought a coke or a newspaper, and was a meaningful part of daily commerce. Alas, inflation set in and rendered a 5 cent piece almost worthless. Baseball player Yogi Berra saw it coming when he said (using improper jargon, I might add) "a dime ain't worth a nickel anymore".
Well...here is my first attempt at posting images. I have collected V Nickels for years and after I finished a VG10- F15 set in a Whitman Bookshelf album, I immediately started an XF 45-AU 55 set [ I had a bit of a leg up on this set as my Grandfather saved some nice coins from pocket change back in the 1940's.] I completed that set about 15 years ago and a couple of years ago I started a certified collection. I'm about 50% complete in grades of AU 55 - AU 58 [ all PCGS certified.] [ scratches are on the holder - PCGS AU 58 ]
Quite true. Early movie houses were known as Nickelodeons because admission was a nickel. Soft drinks were a nickel. A ride on a street car was a nickel. Many, many things cost a nickel. Nickels saw a LOT of use 100 years ago.
Oh yeal Lots of uses for a nickel in the 50's. One Sat I was given a dollar. Mom said I needed a store~bought haircut. While waiting my turn at the barbershop and getting the latest news & views & fishing reviews from the other patrons bought a nickel coke from the machine and played a game of pinball. (One nickel for a 5 ball game.) After my 50 cent haircut decided to get a snickers candy bar....one nickel. And went to a movie and partied with some buddies. By the time I got home Mom demanded my change and was peeved that I only had 5 nickels left.
Common Change And these all worked equally well for public transportation, entertainment, treats and bringing home too few of them. But I have never seen one that was not about "used Up" until looking here. ThanX con~servers of this noble denomination.
Here is the first of many from me... Got the coin in 2008, and my dad got the coin in 1991, and no telling when my grandpa got the coin. lol This is the earliest Liberty Nickel that I have and possibly the most beat up, but still, enjoy!
Good Show Every time I see one of these I ponder where it has been. T$......have you been reading about photoGraphy? Great shots. :thumb:
No I haven't been reading up on anything, just been trying to do the best I can, and also been editing the pics with Photoshop to make them look like they do in hand, got about 11 more days of that before my trial wears out. Trying to do as much as possible! My photography skills are really improving, thanks for taking a notice.
Gimp Well, now you show light is the secrete. Go check out "GIMP" (Just Google it ) open source imaging. It is "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAmost PhotoShop and......FREE! But better yet, please post more of your "V"'s. I love the ones that have actually been somewhere and done something.
