V.D.B. Half Missing

    hey CT Friends, Another newbie question. but Is This Something Common with the Initials?

    It is believed that they ground off the VDB on some of the dies after the decision was made to not have the VDB on the coins. This would be a great example of this. I don't know how common they are.

    I Believe this was a 1991 that I found a moment ago coin roll hunting, Pretty good condition too, I’m gonna put this one away

    Coining dies get worn, clash, and other things happen that bring the need to polish the defects out of the die. If you think of the low points on a coin as the high points on the die, you can see which portions get ground off in the polishing process. On your coin the area of the die below the VDB was ground down during polishing of the die taking part of the VDB with it.

    That would have been in 1909 and the vdb was on the reverse.

    That is correct, I didn't look at the OP's picture very well before my post. I have those 09VDB's on the brain. Sorry for any confusion.
