I remember in the past we had to put these 1 cent stamps in addition to the regular first class stamps to cover any postage increases. Forever stamps are a really good idea overall.
Time to go back through eBay and reconfigure shipping costs. Do they still have the option for you to post the size/weight of the package and let the buyer enter their zip code? I should know but I just breeze through and hit free shipping.
Going off topic... this makes me want to see a philately sub-forum on this forum. There are other sites for stamp collecting but I think there's a noticeable overlap with numismatists and philatelists.
If the stamp has a price on it then that stamp has its value. Nothing can change that. If the stamp does not have a set value imprinted on it chances are it is a forever stamp. There are some older stamps that have a letter and are set price wise.
They also have "2nd Ounce" forever stamps for letters. I have a few of those because some stuff I sell on eBay is 2 ounces. Actually lost money on those because the 2nd ounce went down on the latest change.
The First Class hike is fairly annoying but still not terrible. The Priority hike is down right silly. We’re getting close to other options being cheaper. I’m also not a fan of the zone based shipping. I think we’re seeing the beginning of the end here.
All very interesting and obviously the PO changing to Forever in 2007 was not really beneficial to them as they still lost 4 billion dollars this year.... Albeit that's not the only reason they lost 4 billion this year I'm sure but I'm sure it didn't help......
And the shipped material can't contain any advertisements, which means you can't use it to send magazines, which really gets under my skin. Not even vintage magazines where none of the advertised products are even sold any more.
That doesn't even really make sense...Would that also mean that if you're a dealer, you can't put promotional advertising inside the package?
Jeff is correct and no promotional advertising is allow. No advertising. If you sell a magazine like a National Geographic from 1912 or before and every advertiser is out of business or no longer offers that item or the expiration date has been passed it doesn't matter. It's an ad and that is not allowed.
Actually forever stamps were beneficial to them and they still are. All first class postage stamps with a set price must be returned and destroyed after the postage rate increase. This results in hundreds of millions of dollars down the drain. No one wants the old stamps. You would have to constantly add the difference. The costs associated with the printing of smaller valued stamps is enormous not to mention the costs of what must be destroyed. There are other reasons why the Post Office looses 4 billion dollars on a regular basis.
A big reason I think the Post Office loses lots of money are the prices. People are complaining about the price increases, but think about it, can you ship anything with FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc. for as cheap as you can ship with USPS?
First class letters are the cheapest in the world. One of the biggest problems is management, all levels. Package rates can be cheaper elsewhere. My wife mailed 3 packages this Christmas, all with UPS. One of them was over $13.00 less with UPS. They had it there in 3 days and it was shipped by ground.
Wow! I better look into UPS, then. Every time I've looked into UPS, they've always been a lot more expensive, probably because I'm looking at the smaller packages for coins.
USPS is probably better for smaller packages. They kill you on lighter weight larger packages. They call it dimensional pricing.
