I thought you had the small eagle dime. Actually I thought you had 2 as I talked to you about buying one a few years back
The most recent one I tried for was going to be purchased at the last Baltimore Whitman Show. But by the time I asked the dealer to set it aside for me to look at, it had been sold. My memory of any before that has been lost in the mists of time (and failing mind). So it's still a purchase I'm trying to make.
But sometimes you finances do end. If you want to get technical about it, you would almost have to collect the 1794 half cents by Cohen variety. There were several different bust designs within that year, and there are more differences there than one would find in something like the Type I and Type II Buffalo Nickels. Here are examples of the 1794 and 1795 half cents. The designs are markedly different, but they are covered under the Liberty Cap type. You could take this further and have the lettered and (lighter) plain edge varieties. I could continue, but the cost would go through the roof, especially if you are buying higher grade pieces. These coins are not common in any grade.
Nobody can really argue with anyone’s definition of their own type set, but I’m trying to be realistic and limit mine according to my budget. I’ve more or less decided to do an upgraded version of the 7070, and go from 1800-2000. I plan to include a few things not found in that album, such as the 1800-1803 bust dollar, the earlier half dollars, earlier dimes, and earlier half dimes. I also look for toned coins when possible, and coins with great eye appeal in any case. I even have a couple of better dates (e.g. 1845 seated dollar), just to spice things up a bit. If that doesn’t keep me busy for at least the next 10 years, I’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Ouch! I pulled my Manley book down. Looks like about 15 Cohen varieties of the just 1794 half cent. Now you've got me interested. At least I'll look into it a bit deeper. I like half cents. But if I decided to do anything like that it would be with the Classic Head series (1809-1836). I've got 17 of that set including two 1811 varieties (C-1 and C-2 I believe). Unfortunately I haven't ID'ed the Cohen varieties on most of them. Rats, now my interest has been peaked.
How would this work for a type set? Large date, small date, and an overdate variety? BTW, it's 'piqued,' not 'peaked.'
Oops, you're correct (piqued). Don't tell my wife; I'd be in big trouble. She's an ex-English teacher (33 years). As for the 2¢ coins, I bought an 1867 in MS-64 BN and that's the one I use for my type set. But it stays with my 2¢ set. In fact that coin is also my avatar. I've got a few more coins like that; they serve a dual purpose.
I'm working on my own type set, based off the 7070 definition, but I realize it's limited. I have a large cent that predates that definition, and coins began being minted in 1792, all of those are excluded from the Dansco as well, and some of those are cost prohibitive for me. Plus, there are all the gold coins too. I haven't tried to tackle those yet either. For me, part of the appeal was the album itself. It's my preferred storage method. How will you be storing the coins? For me, the album removes the temptation to go for the very highest of grades in rare coins because no way I'd want to crack those out and no way I'm purchasing that sort of coin uncertified. The Dansco is limited. 50 different state quarters were minted, yet only one is included in the album for instance. Ditto with the commems. Your definition of a type set seems very reasonable, and if you intend to match the 2 cent coin, then you'll be best going with slabbed coins and keeping them that way it sounds like. Good luck! It's a blast! I've been working on mine for a couple of years and I only have about 8 more coins to acquire to complete the set, although I will likely do a few upgrades before I call the project finished.
I was actually referring to what you wrote about Classic Head large cents. I also have a few dual purpose coins. It's totally not cheating, and lets me own better coins than I otherwise could.
Pattern coins are not included in the for circulation or business strike type sets. The only 1792 coin that qualifies for a type set, and I think that it does, is the half disme. All of the others are patterns. So you don't have to worry about them. The trouble is, most any 1792 half disme, unless it has a hole in it or has been runover by a caterpillar, will have a 5-figure price tag.
Agreed. Any issues I collect as a set will have one better grade coin that stays with the set and doubles with my type set. The set that I have for which one coin doubles with my type set are: - Classic Head Half Cents - Braided Hair Half Cents - Liberty Head/Matron Head Cents - Liberty Head/Braided Hair Cents - Flying Eagle Cents - Indian Head Cents - Two Cent Pieces - Jefferson Nickels - Jefferson War Nickels - Roosevelt Dimes - Capped Bust/Reduced Diameter Quarters - Peace Dollars And I have one oddball set: Liberty Seated coins with Arrows at the Date. That covers: - Half Dimes - Dimes - Quarters - Half Dollars I also have a face-different set of silver Early Commemoratives. Plus about half of the gold Early Commemoratives. No, I don't (nor do I EVER expect to) have any of the 1915 $50 Panama Pacific commemoratives.
The trouble is, most any 1792 half disme, unless it has a hole in it or has been runover by a caterpillar, will have a 5-figure price tag. I know, but that happens to be my dream coin there. I haven't given up on that one yet. One day I'll pull that trigger.
That coin is on my radar but WAAAAAY in the distance. I've got two other 5-figure coins that are waiting up front for me to win the lottery. Although for the money I've put into the lottery I could probably have already bought some nice coins
I know the feelin I understand what you mean. I have an Ex who still gambles. Lotto of course, but the whole 9 yards, including weekend trips to casinos. Even out of state. My strategy is to spend a few bucks on the highest payout games. I usually pay out $8 and if I win, it will change my life. If I lose, I wont miss the $8. I dont remember to do this even i once a week. I often forget to check them too. I once built up a total of 42 before I checked them. I win a few bucks now and then. But $8 is less than she spends on gas to get there.
