<p>
Here are several coins with indent errors. You'll notice that they all have one thing in common. The design on the hammer die is NOT transferred to the error coin. The thickness of the overlaying planchet is too thick to allow any design transfer.</p><p><br /></p><p><img src="http://minterrornews.com/priceguideindentimage.gif" class="bbCodeImage wysiwygImage" alt="" unselectable="on" /><img src="http://www.coinworld.com/images/NewCollector/errors/e-indent-s.gif" class="bbCodeImage wysiwygImage" alt="" unselectable="on" /><img src="http://www.onlinesfinest.com/jeffbrockrev64.jpg" class="bbCodeImage wysiwygImage" alt="" unselectable="on" /><img src="http://www.australian-threepence.com/images/australia-2002-1-dollar-indent.jpg" class="bbCodeImage wysiwygImage" alt="" unselectable="on" /><img src="http://www.jimscoins.net/images/indent_1-120x121.jpg" class="bbCodeImage wysiwygImage" alt="" unselectable="on" /><img src="http://www.coinpage.com/images/coins8/grt1973s.jpg" class="bbCodeImage wysiwygImage" alt="" unselectable="on" /><img src="http://www.errorsoncoins.com/cents/indent/indent_1.jpg" class="bbCodeImage wysiwygImage" alt="" unselectable="on" /></p><p><br /></p><p>Now, here's the OP's quarter You'll notice that the design from the hammer die (Washington's chin and neck. Also part of the date (looks like 79)) has been transferred through whatever was overlaying the planchet in the striking chamber. Whatever it was was thin enough to allow the design to be transfered through it by the hammer die. Since a design can not be transferred through a planchet, it follows that something other than a planchet got between the coin and the hammer die. <img src="http://www.cointalk.com/forum/attachments/37780d1230663742t-pc300423.jpg" class="bbCodeImage wysiwygImage" alt="" unselectable="on" /></p><p><br /></p><p>It's a Strike Through</p><p><br /></p><p>Q.E.D.
</p><p><br /></p>
