When I was a kid just starting out, I remember seeing my first Whitman folder (25c then), and thinking, "Look at all those HOLES, gotta fill 'em up...!" Never once occurred to me to collect any other way, although I liked the idea of a Type Set, and it got as much activity as any other album, and I gradually expanded the set back to around 1800; that was about my practical limit.
Same here. Those holes posed an irresistible appeal. Type sets are what I do almost exclusively. One nice example of each is all I need (although I make exceptions for types I really like).
I'm not so sure that's true anymore. There certainly was a time that most people started that way, but type collecting or just collecting whatever you like seems to be a lot more popular now. With how influential the internet has become I would assume that most people now start because they come across something they find interesting.
Hey,Robert I have the Quarter from 1965-1969 and more you want to buy them off of my hand I don't have time for them anymore.
