US 1978 P Quarter Terminally Shattered Die!?!?!!!!

    My fiance the coin collector in the family has a US 1978 P George Washington Quarter that he recently found in pocket change. We inspected it closely and took some pics. The obverse side we think is a terminally shattered die break and we would appreciate it if we could get some input as to the rarity and value.

    Missing reeding.. looks like all Damage to me

    The Clad layer was affected somehow. Not a shattered die IMHO

    Show us the Reverse side also

    I see an altered coin with damage. It may not have been made to deceive but, it would deceive a new collector for sure.

    Looks like post mint damage to me...pics of the reverse will help.

    I agree with others. A shattered die will look differently.

    agree with Mr. Fred - more like a terminally hammered edge - the reeding has been banged smooth and some sort of foreign substance has been applied to the field :yuck:
