I agree with worn die.. They don't put each letter one at a time on the die.. Only a mint mark during certain years would be applied on upside down.
The die making process is Master Hub Master Die Working Hub Working Die The only place that an upside down letter in the motto could occur is the master hub. And if that happened, EVERY die would be like that.
The “R” and “T” look odd too. Are we sure this piece is genuine? With all counterfeits around these day, anything is possible. The Chinese are even making common dates that have little value.
Both coins are normal die strikes for those years. Mine is a proof. It's just an illusion. @Christian buffington- What's the year of your coin?
Actually the top of the S on your proof IS thinner due to excessive die polishing. you will also note the the top of the U is thinner than it should be as well.
