It does look like an upside down S. What's the date. Find another one and put them side-by-side.

I agree with worn die.. They don't put each letter one at a time on the die..

Only a mint mark during certain years would be applied on upside down.

    The die making process is

    Master Hub
    Master Die
    Working Hub
    Working Die

The only place that an upside down letter in the motto could occur is the master hub. And if that happened, EVERY die would be like that.

The “R” and “T” look odd too. Are we sure this piece is genuine? With all counterfeits around these day, anything is possible. The Chinese are even making common dates that have little value.

I'm sure it isn't but it looks upside down compared to this one.

If it's an upside S, how could it occur at the mint?

The top of the S is a little fatter due to die wear IMO.

Both coins are normal die strikes for those years. Mine is a proof. It's just an illusion.

@Christian buffington- What's the year of your coin?

Actually the top of the S on your proof IS thinner due to excessive die polishing. you will also note the the top of the U is thinner than it should be as well.
