as of today. there were 247,125,335 pieces of american eagle silver dollars. break down as following: bullion am.eagle ---- 229,915,542 unc with w mint mark - 1,595,652 proof am.eagle ------ 15,614,141
what does this tell us? provided none of these numbers are offset by any that may have been melted since being minted and released.
as of today there were 36,144,897 amercian eagle gold pieces against 1,559,539 pieces of american buffalo gold in both proof and uncirculated. gold pieces composed of 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce.
what does this tell us? provided none of these numbers are offset by any that may have been melted since being minted and released.
No, I mean you are just listing numbers... what do they mean? What is the purpose of posting them? What do we learn from them and how can you account for all of them not knowing where they have gone, what may have become of them after many years of circulating as peoples investment vehicles. The one or two in your collection aren't going to make that big of a difference here.
Statistics are interesting I really enjoy reading Elaine's statistic posts. It may not be evident immediately what conclusion to draw from them, but it does provide food for thought. :hail::hail::hail: I for one am surprised with how many fewer UNC, with mint mark coins there are as compared to the proofs. I guess being a retired CPA may account for my interest in Elaine's statistics. Keep the posts coming, someone will come up with an interesting story...eventually.
It is great that Elaine posts this information. It helps some of us make decisions on items to purchase from the mint. I'm always updating my spreadsheet were her latest mintage information and looking for trends.
Elaine this is interesting, BUT would you break this down by year like this chart: american eagle silver: 1986 5,393,005 1987 11,442,335 1988 5,004,646 1989 5,203,327 1990 5,840,110 1991 7,191,066 1992 5,540,068 1993 6,763,762 1994 4,227,319 1995 -4,672,051 1996 3,603,386 1997 4,295,004 1998 4,847,549 1999 7,408,640 2000 9,239,132 2001 9,001,771 2002 10,539,026 2003 8,495,008 2004 8,882,754 2005 8,891,025 2006 10,676,522 2007 9,028,036 2008 20,583,000 2009 30,459,000 2010 23,055,500 220,938,940 Thank you

Elaine: I wish there were 700,979 ASE proofs minted in 2009! I think you may have a line shift and 250K is for 2006 reverse proof, correct? TC
yes. you are right. it should be: 2006 --------- 1,093,602 2006 rev proof - 250,000 2007 ---------- 821,759 2008 ---------- 700,979 2009 ---------- zero
Yes statistics can be interesting, but these are often quite general and based upon reported sales figures. There's a lot of rounding up/down by the Mint and various publishers providing these statistics amongst other factors for why they are not precise, but rather approximate. Most of these figures take several years before publications like the Red Book will even report mintages. Another thing is that these are not "Elaine's" statistics. She is copying the information from other sources and usually fails to indicate what source and the date of their original publication to verify them. Where possible to refer to them, I have often found her 'transcription' is full of typos*. Greysheet, Red Book, Coin World, Numismatic News, the various coin blogs... the moment they release figures, charts or such related data, she copies them here as quickly as possible, but doesn't take the time to give them credit for the information many here come to think of as her's. I don't mind sharing information but give credit where it's due and at least attempt to provide some commentary on what's being posted. What does it all mean? What is Elaine's insight with the numbers? Let us know and give the sources credit when citing other published material. *case in point, TCs comment above.
