Unusual Oval Token/Coin/Plaque

Discussion in 'Coin Chat' started by Charitycoincollector, Aug 18, 2020.

  1. Hello,

Has anyone come across one of these before or something similar. The closest I could find was described as a bridge crossing token but seems more like a medal or plaque. It is heavily worn but appears to be metal or lead? Text reads Let Glasgow Flourish around the cities coat of arms. The reverse is a seated female figure in a Grecian/Roman style. weight: 84g approx 5cm diameter. Photos Below. Any info would be helpful thanks. IMG_0142.JPG IMG_0143.JPG

Welcome to Coin Talk. It might be something produced for the 1901 Glasgow Exhibition. There appear to be several types of medals and medallions produced. The ones I have seen from online sources all have the "Let Glasgow Flourish" motto. There are are people on this forum more versed with these items. I am sure they will chime in with the correct ID.

It looks to be white metal or pewter from those images.

I would say pewter it was inexpensive at the time and still is today. What is it's size and weight? That will tell you a lot. Interesting whatever it is. Welcome to CT
