One of the main "tells" is the "dot" as NewbietoCoins and others have pointed out. All of the main attribution points ("sister marks") of the counterfeits are documented in the attribution page. I have nicknamed this "variety" the "dotted E". Also an unknown "die state" as a result of a deep scratch that cut short the die break at "1" in the date...

Isn't this the one I reported a couple of years ago? not the specific coin, but that these were fakes?

Hit it on the head LakeEffect! Through the research we found a likely candidate for genuine source coin that matches well with the features of the counterfeits. The severity of the the scratches and marks have been reduced through developing the dies to strike the clones.

    Images of the probable source:

Poll is closing soon- many good responses and it looks like the majority were spot on.

The genuine TPG grade was AU Details:

And yes, the OP coin and the other two in my collection posted are all struck counterfeits. 2 of them were TPG graded as genuine and the 3rd was on the bourse of a major show, sold to a friend and proven counterfeit when compared to my other 2 examples at the time; it was then donated the collection.

    Thanks everyone for playing!

For anyone intrested my CoinWeek article can be found at: https://coinweek.com/counterfeits/s...-1805-c-4-half-cent-1-page-attribution-guide/

Interesting on the the host coin. I can see the ghosts of the scratches on the counterfeits. It looks like a good match. Thanks again Jack for all your work in spotting these scary fakes

Another great thread. Extra scary that all the posted images are counterfeit.
