Yes Dave, and we tracked down the initial group of them. That info was turned over to Secret Service and Texas CBP.

Couldn't the list of suspects be narrowed drastically to individuals with the know-how, skills and machinery to do this level of precision work?

Another important thing to notice is that some of the die cracks and clash marks were removed from the counterfeit dies. It is a common practice by the counterfeiters for some reason, and it often results in “impossible” die states.

Rare coins should pass a photo I D test. There ought to be a data base here.

Really good point! This is the 4th variety we have seen that in so far. It is interesting to note that some of the die state marks appear in the TPG submitted example shown here especially the clash at "OF":

Is it possible that the PCGS coin is the repaired host?

I don't believe so due to the surface porosity and lack of detail to my eyes compared to the greyer source example, but we may never actually know.
I am inclined to think the redder PCGS submitted example is an earlier strike than my OP coin and maybe the dies were touched up prior to striking mine.

Thanks again for the responses and participation!

    So, here are the “answers”…

The original TPG slab grade was AU Details- Environmental Damage; the previous owner saw fit to remove it from the slab. My contact at NGC wanted to review the coin again after I noted it as counterfeit and the current/ new cert shows “Not Genuine”.

EAC grade is noted on Bob Grellman’s card as “45/30”, meaning the detail level is XF-45 and the grade net of defects (environmental issues- “finely granular”) is VF-30.

This example currently resides in one of ICG's Educational Slabs.

Great thread @Jack D. Young ! Keep these coming if you are up for it.

The hobby commends you for your efforts in the fight against counterfeiting. Cheers to you.

Do you have all of your counterfeits housed in the ICG yellow holders? I wonder why ICG doesn’t give a grade for these counterfeits but they do for the Henning counterfeits.

Steve, not sure other than I didn't ask for a grade; I have several in their holders for display, some raw so the edges are able to be reviewed and more than I like to admit in genuine TPG holders as genuine coins.
