Through the years dealers buy up whole collections to get the coins they want. The coins that don't fit into their marketing or image plans can accumulate over time. If this coin was typical, this is the sort of material that you take to a show to sell in bulk or to dealers who market this type of material. I knew a dealer who bought type coins in Good. He told me that he had connections with a ready buyer who would purchase all of the coins he could supply to him. Personally I never had much success selling type coins in Good, but I guess there is a market out there. Stacks' has been a leading auction house for many years. Coins like this were just not in their plans.
I'll back you up, not that you need it (from me, at least), but indeed overgraded by a lot. Liberty is complete, but not sharp/bold...that plus other VF/ANA Grading Standards takes it to no better than VF35 even if a SB-Monday or a Friday getaway grade (or a status/courtesy grade). More objectively, VF30 may be about right.
Um. Actually, yes it is. Never implied anything of the sort. What I *did* say, however, is that most of the coins from this particular hoard were overgraded by an average of 10 points. Never said “all”. I take it that you have little experience with IHCs
"How interesting/appealing do you find this coin" That was the question. I like it - it has "the look". I gave it a "9" (with No consideration for the grade or TPG).
That is interesting. How does a person correct an opinion of another person about a coin, when the correction is an opinion? What is the over and under bet? What is the over and under bet if the opinion is qualified as an actually correct opinion?
A couple of years ago, I got one of those coins in an auction. It was in an EF45 holder and was REALLY dirty, but I thought I could improve it. I did, and it got into a 62 holder from PCGS. It was still an AU coin, but it was now a pretty AU coin.
