Congrats Andrew. Here are my Probus coins. As much as the bust types are interesting I find the reverses more exciting. The engravers were able to show a dynamic energy to the subjects they cut, especially when it comes to horses... Probus Billon Antoninianus IMP C M AVR PROBVS P AVG Radiate, mantled bust left holding eagle tipped scepter SOL INVICTO Sol in spread Quadriga holding whip KAΓ in ex Serdica 277 AD RIC 864 Bust type H 3.84g Scarce IMP CM AVR PROBVS P AVG Radiate and cuirassed bust of Probus right VIRTVS PROBI AVG - KAΓ in exergue Emperor on horseback trampling enemy, a shield in left hand, spear in right. A shield on the ground under the horse. Bust type B Serdica mint, 280-281 AD 4th emission, 3rd officina 3.92g RIC 880 (C). EF with wonderful smooth dark brown/black glossy patina. Even nicer in hand. Ex-Calgary Coin; Ex-George W. La Borde collection
i have also acquired some coins from the Philippe Gysen collection : This Gallienus appealed to me because the heroic obverse bust is one more normally associated with Probus a few years later. Does anyone have earlier examples ? GALLIENUS, 253-268. Mint Mediolanum (Milan). Antoninianus, Jan.- May 263. G-ALLIENVS AVG. Draped cuirassed bust with helmet and staff, drawn spear and shield in back view left. RV / PAX AVGVSTI / S. Victory with branch and sceptre advancing left . C 767. RIC 502. MIR 1040o. Doyen 459. 2.68 g. 6h. Rare. The last coinage of Postumus. PACATOR ORBIS conveys the message of a speedy victory over the renegade Laelianus but Postumus is then murdered by his own troops (about February / March 269 ?). POSTUMUS, 260-269. I thought that this portrait of Claudius II was in unusually fine style CLAUDIUS II GOTHICUS, 268-270. Mint Mediolanum (Milan). Antoninianus, 1st of Emperor. September 268. Just found in my old boxes. Struck at Antioch, the coin of Probus below has Z dot in lower center. Hope it's rare.
I finally received the coin and imho it looks much better in hand and in my photo than it does in the auction photo. What I thought was some random goop on the coin is in fact left over silvering.
