I often think it's too bad that so many people associate coins with money. Strange as that statement may seem on the surface, if we took all of the values away from all of the known coins in the world, it would be interesting to see how that would shape demand. I try to think of that when choosing new specimens. Would I buy this if it was worthless? If so, then I'm probably buying something that I'll enjoy longer than the next two or three market swings. But alas, so it goes, coins and money remain inseparable and the entire idea of investment seems ineradicable from these little weighty discs. It sort of makes them and ruins them all at the same time. I try to buy coins that make me go "WOW! GOW-ZA!! BAM!! ZOOP!!" on first, second, third and the hundredth sightings. Of course it's hard to predict how one will react to a coin after one hundred viewings, one sort of gets an idea after buying and experiencing enough examples (e.g., I now know that Meiji-era Dragon Yens still do this to me after 1,000 viewings). You seem to know what you like and, as long as you're not throwing money out the window, which you're not, then you're doing everything perfectly. This hobby has no rules. Some people may try to convince you otherwise, but I'd just smile and nod at them. I do, in fact. So you're doing fine and also having a great time with your grandkids. You really can't ask for more than that from anything in life. My only advice, worthless though it is: continue on your path.
