Morning all, I've come across this coin which I have tested and can confirm is silver however I can't work out what type of coin it is. The text is possible Greek though or perhaps Latin? Any help would be appreciated. Photos below.
Latin. It's a Roman denarius of the emperor Trajan (98-117 AD). And a pretty nice one, too, despite the one scratch on his neck.
Here's a breakdown of that long obverse legend, IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P, which is chock full of Latin abbreviations. And here's a similar (albeit not totally identical) example which sold for €95.00 ($98.04 USD). I like the look of yours a bit better, with those subtle hints of color from the old cabinet toning on it. I was guesstimating yours as a $100-ish coin before I looked up that other example (maybe deducting a bit from that, for the scratch). But someone more experienced than I can perhaps give you a better idea of value and pin down the exact catalog attribution (that's not my strong suit).
Not when it comes to Ancients, I’m not. I’m only a part-time dabbler in that field. Intermediate level at best. But thanks.
