Today I took a look at a few of my 50p coins and had a good look under the loupe of my 2008 britannia proof however I noticed that the edges have not been finished and its a bit weird in my experience. Has anyone else had or heard of this ?

Are they 'reeded' or smooth? They look smooth from the photo.

I'm a 'ditz' when it comes to UK coins. You might consider posting your question over on the 'World/Ancients section. Lots of knowledgeable folks there. :)
